Puccini: Madama Butterfly (Suzuki)

Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), concert version | January 2016

Marie-Nicole Lemieux, who brought her potent dramatic presence to Suzuki. The extremes of her acerbic top and plunging contralto made Butterfly’s maid and companion both fierce-tempered and fiercely maternal. The orchestra was often a little too loud—a common issue at the Concertgebouw, where sound carries further than some conductors realise—but Ms Lemieux could easily counter the volume.

Besides Haroutounian the Canadian contralto Marie -Nicole Lemieux sparkled as Suzuki. With her dark and deep voice, she managed to fill the auditorium and in the brilliant duet with Butterfly where she decorates the house with flowers, her voice matched beautifully with the voice of Haroutounian. I knew Lemieux mainly as a baroque singer, but she is also more than equipped for Puccini.

Lemieux Butterfly Liceu Barcelona
